Ten years ago Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) trustee Phil Dowd saw that new ideas were being lost because they had not developed enough to attract conventional funding.

So he created a program to award research grants for new ideas through CMU’s Institute for Complex Engineered Systems — The Dowd Innovation Seed Fund.
