Cris Colaluca is a 14 year old boy who is attending class at his local school for the first time in six years. Technically, he’s sitting at a desk in his room, in New Castle, USA, but a mobile VGo robot allows him to experience his seventh grade math class between two of his peers in the front row.

Cris was born with Spina Bifida and had to stop attending school at the age of eight due to night time seizures associated with the condition as well as other severe complications that require treatment from 16 different doctors.

Physically, Cris can’t hold up for a full day at school but mentally he’s right on par with the rest of the class, particularly excelling at math. ¨He’s so willing to learn,¨ explains his teacher Edward. In the past, teachers came to Cris’s home and they also tried placing a stationary web cam in the class but Cris was still missing out on peer interaction.

Cris still works with a teacher from the school every day, but now with the VGo, his educational experience is much fuller. Superintendent of the Mohawk Area School District, Kathy Kwolek, explains: “In the past, we used technology to bring the world to Cris. Now it allows Cris to come to the world”.

Latitude, an international research consultancy, asked nearly 350 children in Australia, France, Germany, South Africa, the UK and the USA to draw a picture and write a story that answers the question above.

Through this task researchers aimed to take a closer look at the following issues: What intersections exist between learning, play and creativity, and how might
technology facilitate all three fluidly; What kind of relationships do children hope to develop with and through robots?; What are the specific opportunities for robots and other technologies to ignite and encourage children’s learning and creativity?
