<p>Although we may be decades away from building truly life-like humanoid robots, it is never too early to start questioning the legal and ethical implications of creating machines that are hard to tell apart from ourselves. In a brave leap of imagination, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real_Humans"><em>Real Humans</em></a>, a popular Swedish TV show, written by Lars Lundstroem, deliberately blurs the line between humans and robots to explore what it means to be human.</p>
<p><span id="more-5390"></span></p>
<p>The show, which could have been inspired by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiroshi_Ishiguro">Hiroshi Ishiguro’s</a> weirdest dream, is set in an alternative present-day Sweden, where extremely life-like androids with perfect looks called “hubots” are commercialised` to take care of all domestic and workplace drudgery.</p>
<p>With time, some hubots are programmed to acquire free will and become capable of entering into social and even intimate relations with humans. The story follows the emotional effects on two families in possession of hubots as well as the trials and tribulations of a group of hubots that decide to fight for their rights.</p>
<p><em>Real Humans</em> has received a positive critical acclaim, even though it has been repeatedly characterised as creepy and disturbing, which in fact seems to be part of the writers’ intention. The premise of the show allows the creators to explore diverse philosophical questions as well as contemporary social issues.</p>
<p>Although the creators of the show claim that there was no science to rely on in the making of <em>Real </em>Humans, it is remarkable how the show&#8217;s vision resonates with some of the statements made recently by the mentioned Japanese roboticist Hiroshi Ishiguro during the presentation of his latest creations, two eerily human-looking robot newscasters Kodomoroid and Otonaroid. “Making androids is about exploring what it means to be human,” Ishiguro explained to reporters, “examining the question of what emotion is, what awareness is, what thinking is.”</p>

<p>Just like the creators of <em>Real Humans, </em>robotics researchers, such as Ishiguro, warn of possible legal and ethical complications that may arise when humans and robots form stronger bonds, especially if the latter look and behave like us. Most of the present-day robots look deliberately artificial, but there is no reason why it has to remain so once the technology becomes available to make them look human.</p>
<p><em>Real Humans </em>was released in 2012 and screened in at least 50 other countries with great success. Now the show is to be remade in English, with the premiere scheduled for 2015.</p>

<p>From November 6–8, nearly 5000 of Europe&#8217;s top researchers, engineers, industry representatives, politicians, journalists, entrepreneurs, and students gathered in Vilnius, Lithuania to share insight and future visions for the future of <a href="http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/ict/">ICT in Europe</a>. The <a href="http://ec.europa.eu/digital-agenda/en/ict-2013" target="_blank">global event </a>also provided  an inspiring setting for the discussion of European ICT policy as well as networking opportunities for business, research, and innovation groups.<br />

<p>The event —the largest in Vilnius during Lithuanian’s presidency of the EU Council— folds into a greater European initiative: the <a title="Horizon 2020" href="http://ec.europa.eu/research/horizon2020/index_en.cfm">EU Horizon 2020 programme</a>. This visionary plan, combines EU funding for both scientific research, and innovation. This year&#8217;s event included: an international conference, an exhibition, a networking session, an investor forum and events for students and junior researchers.</p>
<p><a href="http://csnblog.specs-lab.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/dj1am_CSN.jpg" rel="attachment wp-att-4826"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-4826" alt="dj1am_CSN" src="http://csnblog.specs-lab.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/dj1am_CSN-300x201.jpg" width="300" height="201" /></a>The exhibition involved over 180 participants from the ICT community. <a title="CSN" href="http://csnetwork.eu/" target="_blank">CSN</a> (the Convergent Science Network) was well received with an exhibit co-organized by the project <a href="http://efaa.upf.edu/" target="_blank">efAA</a> (Experimental Functional Android Assitant, &#8211; EU Robotics Unit of DG Connect- ). The interactive installation titled <a href="http://csnetwork.eu/news/csn-ict2013-machine-and-i-futuristic-vision-robots-and-their-roles-human-society" target="_blank">&#8220;The Machine and I</a><a href="http://csnetwork.eu/news/csn-ict2013-machine-and-i-futuristic-vision-robots-and-their-roles-human-society" target="_blank">&#8220;</a> displayed graphics and drawings that provided futuristic visions of robots and their roles in human society. The project <a href="http://efaa.upf.edu/" target="_blank">efAA, </a>represented at ICT 2013 by the research group <a href="http://specs.upf.edu/">SPECS </a>- UPF &#8211; Barcelona and by <a title="IIT" href="http://www.iit.it/en/research/departments/icub-facility.html" target="_blank">IIT</a>, the Italian Institute of Technology, gave the iCub a chance to express it&#8217;s musical side as it entertained exhibit visitors through musical games as the DJ droid.</p>
<p>Over 40 international presenters covered various topics: from broadband Internet to cybersecurity and nanomaterials to artificial modeling of the human brain. Students and junior researchers had the opportunity to meet many of the conference speakers and other ICT-savvy representatives, later sharing their experience through social media.</p>

<p>Events like this get just about everyone thinking: how will future technologies change the lives of those in generations to come?</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">The<a title="HRP-4C Humanoid" href="http://www.aist.go.jp/aist_e/latest_research/2009/20090513/20090513.html" target="_blank">  HRP-4C Humanoid</a>  robot was developed by <a title="AIST" href="http://www.aist.go.jp/index_en.html" target="_blank">The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) of Japan</a> and <a title="Kawada Industries" href="http://global.kawada.jp/mechatronics/index.html" target="_blank">Kawada Industries</a>. As you can see above, this robot can put on quite the show! Created mainly for entertainment purposes, this robot has even hit fashion runways! <a title="Actroid DER3-3" href="http://www.kokoro-dreams.co.jp/english/rt_tokutyu/actroid.html" target="_blank">Actroid- DER3</a>, developed by<a title="Osaka University" href="http://www.osaka-u.ac.jp/en/guide" target="_blank"> Osaka University </a>and the robotics company<a title="Kokoro" href="http://www.kokoro-dreams.co.jp/english/" target="_blank"> Kokoro, </a>is also being used for similar purposes.<br />

<p style="text-align: left;">Another pretty face below- the mask bot which uses a simple projection of a real human face to achieve its life-like appearance, was developed by AIST and  the <a title="ICS" href="http://www.ics.ei.tum.de/" target="_blank">Institute of Cognitive Systems (ICS) at the Technische University</a> in Munich .</p>

<p>Some humanoids can even play music! Check out a robot released by Toyota back in  2007 that can play the violin.</p>

<p>A joint project between the <a title="MIT media lab" href="http://www.media.mit.edu/" target="_blank">MIT Media Lab</a> and <a title="Drexe University" href="http://www.drexel.edu/" target="_blank">Drexel University</a> put on this performance using 4 HUBO robots which were developed by the <a title="KAIST" href="http://www.kaist.edu/edu.html" target="_blank">Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST)</a></p>

<p style="text-align: left;">Many robots are developed for use as research platforms. <a title="NAO" href="http://www.aldebaran-robotics.com/" target="_blank">Nao</a>, developed by Aldebaran is currently being used in all sorts of research at elementary schools, hospitals and universities around the world.</p>

<p>MIT Media Lab&#8217;s Nexi is giving researchers insight into human-robot interaction. While it couldn&#8217;t pass for a human, the robot does manage to display rather convincing facial expressions.</p>

<p>CB2 is another robot developed by Osaka University. Similarly to the <a title="iCub" href="http://www.icub.org/" target="_blank">iCub</a> (developed by the European RobotCub consortium), it expresses child-like behaviours and learning abilities to help researchers study human cognitive development.</p>
